MATCH PREVIEW: Yeovil look to put in performance in Continental Cup

Yeovil Ladies travel to Chelsea Women for the second time in just under two weeks tonight, in Group One South of the Continental Tyres Cup.

With the opening matches in the group falling very early into Lee Burch’s tenure, the results were less than ideal but it gave the manager a real stepping stone ahead of the league campaign.

A 1-1 draw at London Bees (the Bees secured a bonus point for a penalty shoot-out victory) was followed by a 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace, despite a dominant Yeovil performance. Back in September, a 4-1 defeat to high-flying Championship side Tottenham at Dorchester Town has meant the Glovers find themselves bottom of the group with just one point and two matches left to play.

Tonight’s opponents Chelsea sit top of the group with three win from their opening three matches, while Yeovil sit bottom on just one point. With two games remaining, it is a tough as for Burch’s side but he will be looking for a response from his side after his disappointment at the first 80 minutes against Birmingham on Sunday.

The manager may look to make some changes ahead of the visit of West Ham United on Sunday but will be expecting a performance from his small squad at Kingsmeadow. Monique Fischer is on the cusp of a comeback from a long-term injury, after she broke her collarbone against Arsenal back in September, while the rest of the squad are also available for selection.

Just over two weeks ago, the Glovers went toe-to-toe with the champions, only for them to run out 5-0 winners following the sending off of Nicola Cousins, despite a spirited second half performance from the 10 players who remained on the field.

Elsewhere in Yeovil’s group, Brighton host Championship side Crystal Palace and Tottenham travel to London Bees tonight.

The last match of the group stage will take place a week today (December 12th) at Dorchester Town where the Glovers host Super League rivals Brighton, with kick off at 7:45pm.

But before that, Yeovil face West Ham in what is a crucial match in the top flight as the Glovers look to add to their one victory this season.
