Like many players at Yeovil Town Ladies Rachael Edwards is highly versatile, and is able to operate in defence, midfield and attack. She is equally as effective in each department, but her prime position is as a central defender. Over the years she has proved that this is an area in which she excels, and with it she is one of the first names to go on Steve Phelps’s team sheet each week.
Rachael joined the Glovers from Exeter City in 2005, and has been a main stay in the side ever since, becoming of the squad’s most consistent performers. She is a very good tackler of the ball, and is noted for being able to put in effective and clean slide tackles in most games. She has a great footballing brain, and has the capability to bring the ball out of defence quickly, and being a fine passer of the ball she is the instigator of numerous attacks.
Rachael is strong and fast on the ball, and has played comfortably in three different positions for the club, most notably in the 2008/09 season when operating up front; she turned many heads with some strong and powerful displays, scoring five goals in five games!
Rachael was ever present in the Glovers defence during 2009/10 season, and played a major part in the club’s promotion to the FA Women’s Premier League. And now with the club operating at this new level Rachael is excelling and playing the best football of her life, continuing to be one of the squad’s most vital players.
Rachael Edwards won the 2007/08 Yeovil Town Ladies Club Secretary’s player of the season award and won the Sponsor’s player of the season in 2008/09. She is the vice first team captain, and is the club’s Welfare Officer.
