Jemma Tewkesbury is a special talent who first came to prominence in her early career as half of a lethal striking partnership with Amy Wild at the Dorset Centre of Excellence.
Gifted with superb pace, Jemma is a striker with a fine scoring record. She can also play in midfield, either using her speed on the right flank, or helping to build attacks through the middle. In whichever role she plays, she is a real handful for the opposition, and a massive asset to her team.
Jemma joined Yeovil Town Ladies in 2006, and made her debut at the start of the season at the age of 15. (When league rules allowed such a thing) And even at that tender age she made an immediate impact up at the club, ripping opposition defences apart and scoring goals for fun.
She ended that first season as the club and League top scorer with 28 goals, as the Glovers romped to the League championship, gaining promotion to the South West Women’s Combination League.
Jemma has the talent of being able to get a goal from nowhere, but is also just as apt at getting on the end of crosses in the box to score. Her speciality though, is one-on-ones with the goalkeeper – something that she has proved more than once over the years, scoring a number of vital goals for the club.
The pinnacle for of that promotion winning season for Jem came on a very hot day in the May when deep into extra time she received the ball on the wing to race into the box to score the winning goal in the Pat Sowden League Cup final, so helping the club to finish the campaign with an acclaimed ‘double’.
Jemma made a good transition to Combination football, and had another impressive season in 2007/08. Playing much of the campaign in midfield, she still scored well, and continued to develop as a player, winning much praise for her hard work, ball control and good assist rating.
With Steve Phelps moving to a three-pronged attack in the 2008/9 season, Jemma again often found herself upfront. It was a season that saw her continue to mature, and develop into one of the lynch pins of the attack, scoring twelve vital goals - an average of 0.8 goals a game. This also helped her to gain the team’s most improved player award at the end of the season.
Jemma Tewkesbury is a modest and yet very expressive player, who quietly gets on with the job at hand, yet is at the centre of the team’s passion. She is still in the early stages of her career, and like so many of the youngsters in the Yeovil squad she seems to be getting better by the game, driving herself to continual improvement.
With this in mind, she is imperative to the present of Yeovil Town Ladies, and vital to its future.
Jemma Tewkesbury is an international class Javelin thrower, and hopes to represent Great Britain at the 2012 London Olympic Games.
